Most people refuse to use their brains. Be it organizers or those attending these events. We have so many of these incidents in the last few years across the country with people dying die to crowd and stampede. I am sure RCB and Pushpa incidents must be fresh in the minds of many. But time and again no planning is done by organizers and those attending these events go crazy to get a glimpse of superstars. You get nothing out of seeing or being seen by a superstar celebrity. They don’t know you and don’t care about you. Especially in India, stars have little to no respect for their fans. It is the sad truth. And yet fans behave like crazy.

I just wait for the day people will stop going to these events and give them the importance they deserve.

I am also reminded of that one time I attended a political rally as a teenager. It was crowded and there was rushing mass of people. Years later I think everyone was extremely lucky that nothing happened because something could have happened. All the conditions were present for a stampede like situation.

Now I always demand of anyone who would care to listen to me that they do not attend any crowded event. I prefer unpopular events and not the ones everyone is dying to go to. No India-Pakistan match, no cold play, no RCB victory parade, no Modi/Vijay/Pavan kalyan rally for me. I would rather go and watch a TNPL or an ISL game.

You cannot compare this with illicit liquor deaths. Illicit liquor case - Certain number of people choosing to drink it, and police failed to curb it, or rather allowed it by getting money.

This one is a stampede, where over 10K people attended a rally, including women, children, elderly were present.

In the former case, it was clearly govt's fault. But in the latter, it was primarily with Vijay, the party and their organising team, with some fault on police department. These are not the same. Iirc, deaths even in Airshow stampede (which was primarily police's fault) where the crowd was much much higher, had lower deaths.

A few years ago, we were on the way, by foot, to a prominent mall in the city and there were huge crowds on all roads leading to it. We learnt that a movie promo was scheduled and there was a talk that a celebrity would be making an appearance. It was almost impossible to get anywhere close, even to the main road entrance of it. We couldn't get anywhere close and stood undecided, until we saw the crowd, the usual pushing and shoving, and also the police vans parked, all from afar. Took the wise decision not to go anywhere close and headed elsewhere for the weekend. Read it in the papers the next day that the police had to sway their lathis for controlling the crowd and a few got injured. 

The golden rule is - avoid crowds. There's a real danger of stampede. Don't expect anyone to behave sensibly, neither the police nor the crowd. We haven't reached that level yet.

Obviously, other parties are going to milk this issue for political gain, but if they don’t turn up to meet the families of the victims and the hospitalized, they will also face scrutiny. However, I still believe that the majority of the blame lies with TVK. Vijay literally started his speech by thanking the police, and fans kept posting and sharing stories saying “Vijay anna is a crowd-puller,” glorifying the number of people who turned up. This strongly makes me believe that his extremely late arrival was intentional to gather a massive crowd.

And then, he leaves without a single statement at the very least, he could have said, “My party members will be on the ground to help, I will take accountability.” Nothing. The venue allotment is another discussion that needs to be investigated. TVK organizers asked for space for 10k people (a major problem), and the police should have had better intel on how many might turn up (another problem). But in the end, a large part of the responsibility lies with TVK, and they have not responded or reacted appropriately.

What appalls me most is that instead of showing sympathy for the victims, most supporters are jumping through hoops to protect Vijay’s reputation. That should never have been the first reaction. Seriously ppl should take care of themselves and their kids , for lords sake ppl dont take kids to these rallies !! Its so sad to see kids losing lives .
